Join hands with MSD United Way Vietnam to raise funds for planting 3,375 Lumnitzera trees and promote environmental protection by greening Hung Long Island, Tra Vinh.
The Mekong Delta is one of the most vulnerable regions in Vietnam to climate change. Located at the lower reaches of the Mekong River, this area frequently experiences negative impacts such as rising tides, flooding, and riverbank erosion. Rising sea levels lead to flooding, affecting agricultural production, local livelihoods, and infrastructure. These challenges threaten not only the regional economy but also the environment and social well-being, including in Tra Vinh province. Climate change scenarios indicate that if sea levels rise by just one meter, ๏ปฟapproximately 70% of the Mekong Delta's land will suffer from salinity intrusion, with Tra Vinh alone facing inundation over an area of 1,021 kmยฒ (nearly 46% of its total area). Coastal and riverside lands crucial for aquaculture and agriculture will be submerged in seawater, directly impacting agricultural production.
Hung Long Island, located in Tra Vinh province within the Mekong Delta, is a newly formed alluvial island. It began to emerge in 2011, became more distinct in 2022, and was deemed suitable for mangrove afforestation in 2024. Covering a natural area of approximately 70 hectares, the island has 20 hectares eligible for afforestation. As an entirely new alluvial area, Lumnitzera trees have been identified as the pioneering species for brackish waters, ideal for stabilizing soil in regions with high porosity and deep subsidence. According to government regulations, establishing and maintaining 1 hectare of forest over a 10-year period requires initially planting 2,500 Lumnitzera trees and replanting 875 supplementary trees. This initiative will contribute to the formation of an original mangrove forest, helping to stabilize sediments, prevent coastal erosion, mitigate seawater intrusion, and act as a buffer against strong winds and storms. Once the Lumnitzera forest reaches maturity after five years, the introduction of other mangrove species will be considered.
In response to this situation, MoMo Super App, in collaboration with MSD United Way Vietnam and supported by the Dutch Business Association Vietnam, is launching the "Environmental Ambassador โ Planting 1 Hectare of Lumnitzera Trees and Promoting Environmental Protection to Green Hung Long Island, Tra Vinh" project. Lumnitzera trees play a crucial role in preventing coastal erosion, stabilizing soil, and preserving coastal ecosystems. Additionally, these trees help protect irrigation infrastructure, farmland, and improve ecological conditions while enhancing biodiversity.
After conducting thorough research and evaluation of afforestation efforts in Tra Vinh province, we have decided to implement this project at Hung Long Island, with specific activities including:
We believe that this area will develop into a natural protective barrier against storms, strong winds, and soil erosion. The project's anticipated benefits include:
